Hey readers, let’s talk music. Music provides a way for people to relax and leave the world behind. It‘s a way to express how you’re feeling when you don’t know how to define what exactly it is that you feel. For some people, music is the only safe, comforting, sound in their life. It’s a truly beautiful thing to hear a song that touches your soul and speaks right to you, letting you know that you’re not alone, wherever it is that you’re standing. Music provides an escape for when life is hard, and happiness for when it’s joyful. I’ve often heard it said that you’re happy you enjoy the beat, and when you’re sad you understand the words. It’s incredible how lyrics can touch and heal a heart. In many ways, music becomes the best medicine. Many people listen to rap and only hear profanity and negativity. I’m not saying that there aren’t songs like that out there, because there are, but usually if you really listen to the lyrics you realize that most songs have a much deeper meaning than you ever thought. An artist I listen to frequently is Juice Wrld. A lot of his songs include drug content and for the longest time I wondered why someone successful with so much potential would already start to throw his life away. So, instead of only listening to his biggest hits, I started at the beginning. His first music came out his sophomore year of high school when he still went by his birth name, Jarred Higgins. I fell in love with the way his music made me feel and how relatable it was. I also began to understand why he so often sang about smoking and drinking. Those were his ways to cope with the real world, and while they weren’t the safest ways, at least I was finally able to see where he was coming from.
Many of Juice Wrld’s songs hit deep with me but the one that gets me the most is called “Hide.” This song means so much to me because of the level I can relate. The song feels like a safe spot in a way. Juice Wrld suffers the absence of his father and the deaths of two friends, Li’l Peep and XXXtentacion. He has also had several relationships that went badly and the heartbreak caused him to go through a period of depression and some bitterness towards women. It see,Ed like he’d never be able to love again, but this one is about him finding the right woman. He raps about how he feels that he can go to her about anything and how she helps him face his “demons”. He describes how she’s gained his trust and things are looking up for him. Juice Wrld even includes a lyric claiming “Love at my front door, short notice.” After all that this inspirational star has been through he still believes in the possibility of love. This song is so encouraging to me because not only does he show growth as a romantic, butalso as an artist. Not once in this song does he mention drinking or drugs. He‘s so set on letting us know everything about this girl, drugs aren’t important anymore.
I see the song “Hide” as hope for the broken hearted. This song shows that even if you don’t come from a picture perfect family, and you’ve made mistakes in the past with love, you can still learn to love. To me, this song is proof that even when you feel like you’ve hit deeper then rock bottom, there is a,easy a way to get back up. “Hide” tells us that if you’ve got trust issues, you’ve got walls now, you’ve been hurt, it’s most certainly possible to put your heart in the hands of someone else again. This song became an escape for when school was hard, or family situations were tough. I guess it’s fair to say that this song actually became my place to hide. It helped me see that in fact things could get better. He will always be an inspiration to me and many others.
P.S
I wrote this before Jarred Higgins passed away. I meant every word, and it’s been really hard accepting that he’s gone. One of his songs inspired me to find my favorite thing to do. I don’t wanna let go yet. It’s crazy how many stars were losing. I was really, really hoping that Juice would stay with us. But hopefully the rappers left start understanding that their choices, drugs and alcohol, affect us. The listeners, the fans. I just hope that they start thinking more about these things, because when they go, it hurts.
