Hey readers! Let’s talk music. Today the spotlight is taken by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think Anthony Kiedis is a very talented singer. My mom’s older brother is really into rock/punk music. We’re pretty close and I love hanging out with him. He introduced me to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica, Green Day, Weezer. He showed me a lot of the classics and I was really intrigued because it was a very different kind of music than what I was used to hearing, and I loved it. I started listening to the Chili Peppers a lot after he showed me their music. I think that their song “Californication” has a really great message in it. There’s a lot wrong with what society views as important, and this sing addresses that matter. I love how real this song is and that it calls out a lot of things that need to stop.

Californication is about how Hollywood (and most people in general) tend to sexualize things or people. How they sugarcoat a lot of things that are just totally wrong. And the Chili Peppers call it Californication, and it really does fit. It’s crazy what fame can do to you, or what you do for fame. Honestly it’s so sad that people have to write songs about sex or drugs or drinking. Katy Perry is one example. This beautiful, talented singer wrote a worship song. But people wouldn’t publish it if she wanted to get to Hollywood and be successful. They wanted her to write something sexy, something trashy. Basically they wanted to dumb her down and seem like your average party girl. So she wrote a song about kissing other girls, and got famous for it. It’s so wrong. It’s terrible to think that she had to write about being a lesbian instead of a worship song, all because she wanted to feel desired.

I think Californication is an important song because we need to realize what really goes on behind the curtains of becoming famous, and the sacrifices people are making for it. So many people risk way too much for way too little, and have to make it seem like a dream. It seems like when people finally get noticed, they aren’t even themselves anymore. They’re what they think everyone else wants to see and hear. I love that the Red Hot Chili Peppers because it’s a very important subject that needs to be talked about.
