Lauryn Hills’s song “Do Wop“ is possibly my favorite song yet. It’s about how different types of people view relationships and what their motives are. I‘m sure many people would argue that this has been done many times before, but they’d be wrong in this case. Because this song has a twist. This song, this masterpiece, brings to the light both sides of the story. The side of men, and of women. There are so many things that we tend to generalize as things that only men do. These things include rape, maybe domestic violence. But rape goes both ways. Abuse goes both ways. Sleeping around carelessly, sadly goes both ways.
Feminism is becoming so popular that it’s getting to the point where women believe they’re better than men. I do believe feminism is important to a certain extent, and that is equal rights. Women are not better than men, especially with this level of hypocrisy. The whole reason feminism started was because men believed they were better, and women began to get treaded very poorly, and in some places still do. I’m both impressed and happy that society was able to change that but I am disappointed that our only answer was to turn it around. In the past hundred years, there have been periods where women were treated as nothing. At the rate we’re going, what’s to say in the next hundred that it won’t be like that for men? We cannot judge men and do the same things with the only excuse of being a woman.
This song talks about all the similarities and differences of men and women, and how often times we act the same way but just want to blame to opposite sex. This song isn’t specifically about feminism, but it definitely shines light onto the subject. It really makes you think of what life is all about. Because no, it’s not about rocking your booty shorts with your platform stilettos. It’s not about having the boyfriend/girlfriend status. It’s not about getting wasted or high and sleeping around. It’s about having one person, who you want to spend the rest of your life with. It’s about loving meaningful, blameless days. And most importantly, equality. We have to remember that men and women are made from the same god, we have the same rights, and the same capabilities.
